From the Cop side: For those of you who live in states where the gun laws are more reasonable, congratulations. I happen to live in California. Now, CA has some really nice weather...most of the time. But crime is getting way out of hand. A few months ago 4 highly trained Oakland cops were murdered by an asshole out on parole....who used "firearms."
I've been a civilian cop for 30 years now. I can retire anytime I want now. When I retire, I plan on leaving this state.
With such nice weather you ask: "Why?"
Because of the nasty people who live here. By the time I do retire, about 50% of the population will be supporting the other 50%. I don't mean half the citizens will be retired, but half will not work, will never have worked and will have no intention of working. I will contribute more in state taxes when I retire, than many of these "non-working" folks will in their entire life.
Not only will half the population not be paying taxes, but they will expect some sort of government assistance....welfare, police services, drive without a license, free food, etc.
That's only part of the problem. But many of these "non-working" citizens will be turning to crime to support their drug habits etc. They will be breaking into homes, cars and businesses to take things and money from the 50% who are supporting them.
Sometimes these criminals will, like they do now, use firearms.
But you say: "California has some of the strictest firearm laws in the country." That makes no difference. The average honest citizen in CA can't get a concealed weapons permit. Just to purchase a firearm, they have to more than they do in Iraq.
In CA you have to fill out many forms...that's OK. Then they do an computer check...the gun store finds out right away if you can own a gun legally. Then you have to wait 10 days.
Even sworn police officer in CA have to wait....unless you can get an exemption letter from your chief. The average good citizen in lets say Texas or Arizona, can just walk into a gun store, fill out the forms, pay and walk out with a gun right then and there. I have been through extensive background checks, psych test, etc, and I have to have a "mommy may I letter" from my chief, or wait 10 days.
I mean Jees...I carry a gun everyday, I shoot AR-15s, shotguns, machine guns and can take citizens to jail. I teach cops and soldiers how to shoot. I don't get it....I bought a new Benelli shotgun the other day. Why you ask? Because I didn't have one yet. It was on sale, and they only had one left...so I couldn't wait 3 or 4 days to get a letter, so I bought it as a civilian would. I waited the 10 days.
When I went to pick it up, I told the clerk I needed some ammo. He said I'd have to take the gun out and put it in my car first. I didn't want to tell him I had a fully loaded .45 under my shirt and it didn't make sense.
Last week, shotguns were used in a few crimes to murder people in CA. From what I can tell, none of them were legally purchased and in some cases, the shooter was not allowed to have a firearm due to past felonies. I'm sure none of those shooters will be charged with the illegal possession. But you can bet if an honest citizen only committed a minor firearms infraction in CA, they'd be charged.
CA gun laws do nothing to prevent crime. Most of the police chiefs don't understand this, and thinking they're helping, they support all the gun control laws.
When you look at the states that have laws that allow good citizens the "right to carry," they have lower incidents of assault and other felonies. An asshole bad guy is afraid to attack somebody who he thinks might shoot him. Remember, they're cowards.
Wow....listen to me, I sound like a conservative now.

When I was a teenager, I carried a Browning High Power (9mm). When I went to war I carried a Colt Model 1911 A1/Model 66 S&W. When I pinned a badge on I carried a Model 21 Glock.
Even though I have a CCW like CI-Roller Dude: Today if I wanted to buy a firearm, I wouldn't buy it through a retail outlet...because I live in the People's Republik of Kalifornia.
The only people impacted by firearms laws are the law abiding.
Criminals have a better choice of firearms and ammo than the law abiding. The laws are ABSURD.
Back in 2004, our guard unit went to Ft Hood, TX for 3 weeks of totally useless training. The first Sunday we got off...I drove over to a small local gun show.
I asked a seller: "What does it take to buy a gun here...I'm from California?"
He responded with: "Do you have money?"
Nope, you just sound like you want to remain a free man ...
I love TX and AZ. I went to the range today and shot my XD-40. The guy next to me shot his AR-15. The range was packed...adults, kids, mil, cops, women.
None of us law-abiding citizens had to wait for anything but a go-ahead from the rangemaster.
The crime rate is very low in my town. We like to remind potential 'bad guys' we are proud owners of firearms by displaying an NRA sicker in our windows...sometimes next to the burgular alarm sticker...since it's only an alarm and a phone call. A weapon is much more convincing to keep some coward from trying to hurt you. :)
Texans and Arizonians have bumper stickers that read "I'm not a native, but I got here as fast as I could..."
Glad to see you are coming around from the dark side. I don't blame you for leaving CA, either. What are you waiting on?
Those new Benelli's look nice...
Looks like you're having fun in the pic too. :)
It probably wouldn't help in the 10 day wait thing, but can you buy your arms on-line?
Roller, you are crossing over to the dark side. ;-)
Don't worry about it. Conservatives are cool. And the ladies are prettier and cleaner.
Ok a trip down memory lane. When I started in police work, I was a reserve for 6 months. I had to supply my own pistol, so I bought a Colt Trooper- .357 Mag. Then a S&W Model 19. When I got hired on full time, they issued a S&W Mod 66 .357 mag.
Later, I changed departments and ended up with my own pistol again- a Model 13 S&W. Then, when we got a new chief, I carred my Colt 1911 .45 auto---for about 10 years.
We changed chiefs, and the new chief wanted to switch the rest of the department over to semi autos-- so I went to a Beretta Mod 92. Still have it and since it's may issued weapon for Army stuff, I kept my own to practice with.
Now, I carry a Para LDA .45 on duty....with lots of smaller off duty guns.
But, CA gun laws suck. I am moving as soon as I retire.
Can't blame you for leaving CA. I just wish you could take the gun laws with you.
Nickie,
I was thinking of taking the Calif gun laws, and dropping them in the ocean.
I love this state. I love its history, the geography, the weather, even the art and literature inspired by it.
But we're leaving. I'm 3rd generation Californian, and it pains me to see how much this state has changed for the worse. As much as I tried to think it's an illusion --it isn't.
I guess a part of me will be like Joan Didion --a Californian, who loves what the state was, but regretfully has to leave what the state has become and live elsewhere.
