From the Cop side: I could tell stories all day long about some really horrible leaders in both law enforcement and the Army. Too many times in police work, they promote the person who actually has the least knowlege on how to do the job...but is very good at having "nice hair."
The funny thing is, I like doing police work-- still after 30+ years. Nothing like solving a case and getting bad guys out of the way.
So good citizens, when you think the local police are not doing a good job...look at the leadership. Or as we used to say: "We still do a good job despite the lack of any kind of leadership."

One of the reasons cops deserve the title HERO is the majority of the officers do a fantastic job regardless of their leadership. They know what and how to do on the streets even though the ‘uppers’ have no idea. Just encourage the younger guys to do what is right and safe regardless of what they are told. We will be better off for it.
1. Police are a lot more professional than they were 35-40 years ago.
2. Our local police require an associates or BA degree in Criminal Justice or 4 years military service in the MP's.
3. My young Marines at Pendleton used to hire on with the LAPD with a Honorable and infantry service.
4. About 75% of the local applicants fail the polygraph.
5. Know this because I know the local police chief.
6. He is very proud of the quality of his force. They are mostly fit, young, energetic and technically competent. Reminds me a bit of today's military.
7. My only gripe is that there doesn't seem to be much wiggle room. Procedures are cut and dried.
8. Mess up the least bit and you will be detained, arrested and paraded in front of a magistrate.
9. Unless, of course, you are an obvious illegal alien. Dealing with them is such a procedural nightmare, all but the worst behaviors tend to be ignored. Which drives a lot of people here crazy, if they find out about it.
10. Anyway, if I have to be protected, the bunch here will do about as good a job as I could wish for.

LMAO. Amen, brother!
CP,
Yep, despite what the media may think, most cops and soldiers I know really want to do a good job and make things better.
Mr West, When I started in the business, a little over half the cops had military service...then it went to almost zero around where I work...now it's going back up.
After an Iraq deployment (Fallujah, Mosoul, TelAfar, Baghdad, etc)....police work is easy!
